520 | _aCells are active participants in their environment, constantly adjusting structure and function to accommodate changing demands and extracellular stresses. As cells encounter physiologic stresses or pathologic stimuli, they can undergo adaptation achieving a new steady state and preserving viability. Hyperplasia is one of the principle adaptive responses. It is important to note that the hyperplastic process is always controlled, and disappears if the stimulation abates, which differentiates this process from cancer. Nevertheless, pathologic hyperplasia constitutes a fertile soil in which cancerous proliferation may eventually arise (Kumar et al., 2003). | ||
